WIESBADEN - The 2022 Census surveys have gone on for about three months. The face-to-face interviews have mostly been completed. A small number of the respondents will be contacted again for a brief personal interview. This follow-up survey will take only about three to five minutes. Across Germany, roughly 400,000 people who were selected at random will be interviewed again. They represent approximately four percent of the people living in households and residential establishments who provided information in the first survey.

The aim is to assess the quality of the results
The follow-up survey is compulsory in all EU countries and is carried out to enable a subsequent quality assessment of the population figures ascertained in the 2022 Census. The information collected in the follow-up survey is compared with the data provided previously. This is done to check whether all people living at the randomly selected addresses have been covered. The census results already available will not be changed or corrected using the information from the follow-up survey. The follow-up survey will run until about mid-November.

Obligation to provide information in the survey
The interviewers will ask for your surname and first name, sex, date of birth and whether you occupy another dwelling in Germany besides your main residence. As in the first survey, there is a legal obligation to provide information for the follow-up survey. This obligation has not been discharged by providing information in the first survey.

Appointments will be made in writing
The procedure of the follow-up survey is similar to that of the first survey. The census interviewers will notify the selected households in writing of the date and time for the face-to-face interview in the follow-up survey. They are not the same interviewers as in the first survey. Similar to the procedure of the first survey, the interviewers will show their interviewer identity card together with an official photo identification, such as a passport or identity card, when they arrive. The short interview can also be carried out at the front door or outside.
