WIESBADEN - A census has been conducted in Germany since May this year. A total 28.3 million responses have already been received in the census. Household interviews will be finished in November. The statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder ask all those contacted to comply with their obligation to provide information by that time. The legislators established the obligation to provide information for the 2022 Census in view of the high quality standard to be met by the census results. What will then happen to the collected data?

The statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder will start processing the data in November 2022
The goal of the 2022 Census is both to determine current population figures for Germany, the Länder and the municipalities and to provide information on the living, working and housing circumstances of the people. For the purpose, the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder will start processing the collected data when the surveys are finished in November 2022. The data collected in the surveys will be compared statistically with information from the population registers, checked for inconsistencies and completed through statistical procedures where required. “These processes take some time”, says Dr. Georg Thiel, President of the Federal Statistical Office. “Processing the data in a precise manner is however indispensable so that we can ensure high-quality census results.”

Information on households and families will be generated in the course of 2023
When the data have been processed, a statistical procedure will be applied as of mid 2023 to determine household and family relationships. Such data are combined from various census sources (household survey, census of buildings and housing and population registers) and are generated in an automated manner. The purpose of that household generating procedure is to obtain data on the number and structure of households and their housing circumstances.

The results of the 2022 Census will be released in November 2023
The results of the census will be released in November 2023. All census results will be provided digitally, that is, in an open and machine-readable form. After the census results have been processed and analysed, they will also be forwarded to Eurostat, the European statistical office, by 2024.
